Howdy! For Native Plant Month we are looking for volunteer help for our annual Planta Nativa Social held on Thursday, October 16. Volunteers will be helping people find their way around the event, label plant, as well as assist in transporting plants to a designated pick-up location for guests.

Planta Nativa Social is an annual event aimed at celebrating Native Plants. We aim to have vendors and plant sales that promote native plants and the benefit they have on our everyday lives.

October is Native Plant Month- celebrate native plants by making room for them to grow! Volunteer with the Center for Urban Ecology for a morning of habitat protection and a little bit of exercise.

From 9:00-11:00am, we’ll be tackling one of our worst invasive species; the Coral Vine (Antigonon leptopus). The vine rapidly grows from tubers, covering shrubs and trees in a smothering blanket of leaves. Left unchecked, it can cover large areas and hurt our natural habitat. Volunteers will also go home with a free native plant!

IMAS is looking for enthusiastic and outgoing volunteers to assist at the 2025 Día de los Muertos Festival & Market at the Museum on October 11, from 10 am to 5 pm. Volunteers will help IMAS Education team facilitate and assist in hands on activity areas. 

Celebrate and discover the Dia De Los Muertos holiday this October at IMAS with Family and Friends! Bring your loved ones in spirit and honor their memory as you enjoy performances, food, arts and crafts and much more!

VOLUNTEER AREAS:
1.    Art Studio – Piñata Mural Assistants
Description: Assist IMAS Educators and visitors in this community art project with visiting artist Josue Ramirez. Together, visitors will contribute to a piñata mural by applying strips of tissue paper. Assist participants by ensuring they have the right color tissue paper for their mural section and provide glue sticks as needed.

2.    Industrial Lab – Sugar Skull Assistants
Description: Assist in the Industrial Lab as a Sugar Skull assistant. Ensure visitors show their receipt for their additional sugar skull activity and help clean up activity tables for incoming participants. Participants will decorate their sugar skull with colorful frosting bags and sprinkles.

3.    Science On a Sphere – Loteria Facilitators  
Description: Assist IMAS Educators in the Loteria room by providing visitors with cards, coins and beans. Assistants will help call out cards along with IMAS Educator, check winner cards and give out sugar skull prizes.

4.    MPU Biozone Lab – Oja Lata Tin Art Assistants
Description: Oja Lata is a folk art that uses tin to create colorful embossed pieces of art. Volunteers will assist IMAS Educators in the Biozone Lab by providing participants with tin squares, embossing tools and markers. Assistants will also provide help to participants by showing them how to use their embossing tool.

5.    Discovery Pavilion – Scratch Art Masks & Butterfly Craft, Loved Ones Remembrance Wall Facilitators
Description: Assist in the Discovery Pavilion at two craft stations, Scratch Art Masks and Loved Ones Remembrance Wall. Visitors will use wooden scratch sticks to create colorful patterns on their calavera masks. and cut and color their monarch butterfly to add to the Loved Ones Remembrance Wall. Assist participants by providing stretchy cord for their calavera masks and glue dots for their butterflies.

6.    Art Galleries – Calavera Poems Assistant
Description: Calavera Poems can be added to altars as a way to remember our loved ones through poetry. Participants will write short poems for their loved ones such as a grandparent or pet. Assist participants by providing visitors with paper and pens and ensuring pens are kept at the activity tables.

7.    Art Galleries – Gallery Monitors
Description: Help IMAS by ensuring visitors are not entering gallery entrances with food or drink. Trash cans are located at all entrances for disposal.

Our community and wildlife urgently need your help. The Rio Grande Valley continues to lose critical native habitat, and tree planting is one of the most effective ways we can restore balance, protect wildlife, and create a healthier environment for future generations.

That’s why we are calling on community members to take action at Rio Reforestation 2025 — a large-scale habitat restoration event. This year’s planting will take place on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge’s Milagro Tract.

Location: 904 W Doffin Rd, Pharr, TX 78577
Once you arrive at this address, signs and volunteers will guide you to the planting site. Please note: access to the site will require driving beyond the border wall.

Start Time: 8:00 AM

By planting trees together, we will fight habitat loss, improve air and water quality, and provide shade and shelter for both people and wildlife. The need is real — and your hands-on support will make a lasting difference.

Whether you enjoy jump scares, creepy characters, or playful Halloween fun, this is your chance to step into the spotlight and be part of one of Harlingen’s favorite seasonal traditions!

Volunteer Benefits:

The City of McAllen Parks & Recreation Department is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help make the Halloween Festival at Westside Park a fun and memorable event! Volunteers will assist in a variety of roles, including:

Scare Crew: Our scare crew is spread out throughout our 5k trail! During the 5k they are responsible for scaring the runners! We encourage our scare crew to either dress in all black or actually dress in a Halloween costume! Our scare crew is asked not to touch any of the runners, just a jump scare!

Game Attendants: Throughout our festival we have 4 rides and 10 inflatable moon jumps and obstacle courses! Our game attendants are responsible for making sure every person has a wrist band to attend the ride and maintain a line! Some games (like moon jumps) require the attendants to keep track of time to ensure everyone has a fair opportunity on the inflatable!

Arts and Crafts: Our volunteers helping us with the arts and crafts are responsible for engaging with the kids, helping make arts and crafts and handing our prizes in the table games!

Volunteers will help ensure all activities run smoothly, provide assistance to participants, and contribute to a safe and festive environment for the community.

Requirements:

Volunteers must be 16 years or older

This is a joint cleanup between the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program and RGV Fishing Area and Waterway Cleanups.

There will be a boat portion for which boat captains are being asked to contact Justin LeClaire at jleclaire@cbbep.org. Anyone who can bring their own boat is also asked to contact Justin.

All cleanup supplies such as trash bags, trash grabbers, work gloves, nitrile gloves, sunscreen, insect repellent, waters, Gatorades, snacks, and chips will be provided. A lunch will also be provided.

This cleanup will be Saturday, October 25th from 8:30am to 12:30pm at the Adolph Thomae Jr. County Park in Arroyo City.

Boats need to be in the water by 8:30am.

Volunteers who want to get on the boats need to be at the pavilion by the boat ramp in Thomae Park by 8:15am.

Please bring shoes or boots suitable for walking in water.

There will be two stations at the site, and you will decide where you would prefer to be. More information will be explained on the day of the event.

Operation Christmas RGV is looking for passionate and creative individuals to join our Press Office Team as volunteers! We're expanding our media presence and need your talent to help us share our mission of spreading hope and joy across the Rio Grande Valley.

The Treasurer Committee helps ensure that every dollar raised is used wisely and reported transparently. Their work directly supports our ability to serve hundreds of families each year through our programs, such as toy drives, community meals, and holiday assistance. The committee’s efforts strengthen the foundation that allows our outreach to grow. The Treasurer Committee within Operation Christmas RGV plays a vital role in supporting the financial integrity and transparency of our nonprofit. This committee works closely with our Treasurer to assist with budgeting, record-keeping, fundraising logistics, and financial reporting.

Requirements:

- Basic understanding of financial organization (no formal accounting required)

- Comfortable with spreadsheets and digital communication

- Strong attention to detail and confidentiality

- Willingness to learn and collaborate in a team environment

Duties:

- Assist with monthly financial reviews and documentation

- Help track income and expenses for events and programs

- Support grant reporting and fundraising documentation

The Inclusion Caboose prides itself in being a unique park library whose goals are to increase literacy within the community and to provide inclusive programs for children with special needs. The Inclusion Caboose is located on the side of Linear Park closest to the Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts and runs along with the Farmers Market.

As a volunteer one might help:
-Greet caboose patrons

-Assist in restocking books

-Assist with planned activities for the day (i.e. arts & crafts, storytelling, and a puppet show).

Help us fight hunger by volunteering in our Senior Box Program station where we prepare boxes of nutritious food to improve the health of elderly people or in our Product Recovery station where we inspect, sort, and clean product received from local food drives and retail donations. While these two stations are where volunteers help most often, opportunities may change based on necessity in other departments.

Cinderella Pet Rescue currently only has one social media platform (Facebook) and a website. We need to get other platforms (es. TikTok, Instagram, etc.) established to promote the pets, the needs and the agency. The goal of more adoptions, more volunteers and more funds to support the animals should be easier with the addition of additional active social media platforms.

Probaditas 2025 – Nutrition & Community Support

Support Probaditas, a program promoting La Cocina Alegre through community outreach. Volunteers will assist with general tasks including:

French, Spanish, and speakers of other languages needed for document translation to assist individual's work authorization applications. 

When individuals submit documents to the court and other adjudicators, all of the documents must be presented in English.  We launched Remote Translator Program in February 2021 as an effort to extend our ability to provide translation assistance to the individuals we serve. These documents may include things that will be presented before immigration court and/or other agencies, such as identity documents and declarations. 

Work may be done remotely.  Turnaround time for a document will vary.

-     Mini Catapult Launchers Assistant: Experiment with energy and motion through catapult engineering design and kinetic and potential energy. Use wooden skewers and rubber bands to form your structure and see how far you can launch your projectiles outdoors!

-       Volunteer Description: Volunteer in the MPU Biozone lab with an IMAS Educator and assist visitors as they create their take home mini catapults. Volunteers will ensure activity supplies are organized and tidy for incoming visitors while providing assistance and help as needed. 

Ann Moore Art Studio

-       Snap Circuit Spin Art Assistant: Help visitors create mini work of spin art with Snap Circuit projects. Circuits need to create a complete path to allow electricity to flow and turn your DC motor on. Then place your paper circle on the motor axle and carefully add different colors of markers to the paper and watch how the motor creates mini works of spin art!

-       Volunteer Description: Get into Craft and Tinkering as you work with snap circuits to create simple circuits to make your motor go. Create a unique work of spin art as you experiment with markers, paper and a DC motor.

El Estudio Gallery

-       El Estudio Gallery Assistant: Explore the intersection of art and science in El Estudio. Create a stop motion video at Animation Station, experiment with physics at Chain Reaction and create vibrations at Pitch Slider and more!

-       Volunteer Description: El Estudio is full of interactive and engaging hands-on exhibits, from Pitch Slider to Chain Reaction. IMAS is looking for a volunteer to help visitors who may have questions about these exhibits and how they work.

Outdoor Courtyard

-       Outdoor Games Facilitator: Get active outdoors and facilitate games with kids and families. Facilitated games include sack races, three-legged race, and tug of war. Other outdoor games and activities include corn hole, large Jenga, large chess, and bubble station.

-       Volunteer Description: Volunteer in the game station in the outdoor picnic courtyard and invite visitors to race against each other in sack races, show their strength in tug of war and coordinate with their partner in the three-legged race. Volunteers will gather participants, provide game instructions and referee games.

Students interested in assisting the South American Archaeology Lab can reach out to lab coordinators, Dr. Sarah Rowe or Dr. Guy Duke. Volunteer hours are on Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout the school year. Students will inventory books, files, and artifacts, and digitize slides, videos, and other media.

PVAS will have one adoption specialist at Petsmart every weekend and every other Sunday at Petco from 11:30am - 5:30 pm. They can use a hand to help set up/break down for the event and support them in engaging with the community and helping close the deal on adoptions of an interested pet.

We are seeking dedicated individuals to assist with ongoing janitorial and groundskeeping duties to help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment at our facility. This opportunity is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and includes tasks both inside and outside the building.

Volunteers will be responsible for sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning restrooms, taking out trash, cleaning windows, and maintaining staircases. Outdoor responsibilities include trimming trees and bushes, sweeping exterior areas, caring for flower beds (including adding mulch when needed), and collecting trash in and around the parking lot.

All volunteers must complete a 5-hour orientation, pass a background check, and adhere to established volunteer rules. The minimum age requirement is 18 years, with no maximum age limit for those able to perform the duties.

Communal cat rooms allow you to enjoy the attention of multiple kitties. But cats also need care, like having clean litter boxes, fresh water and food. Members of the kitty committee commit to taking care of the cat room duties one day per week. That means cleaning litter, ensuring fresh water and kibble are available and dispensing canned food. It also helps to sweep the floor to provide a clean environment for the cats to play. Then is play time. You can use toys and laser pointers to encourage exercise and play, or you can enjoy the cuddle cats that like to be held and loved on. Most of the kitties really like positive attention and reward you with plenty of purrs!

BARCC volunteer duties include cleaning and feeding animals, grooming and exercising animals and attending outreach events. Volunteers working alongside our team are given thorough instructions on how to properly clean kennels, feed, and care for the animals.

Join us on Saturday mornings as we do land stewardship projects for Quinta Mazatlan. Volunteers will get to learn more about local ecology, sustainable landscaping practices, RGV biodiversity, and more, all while giving back to the ecosystems that support us.

The Sheltering (SH) Service Associate is a temporary position assigned to work in person in a Red Cross Shelter before, during and/or after a disaster event. Sheltering Service Associates complete task necessary for shelter operations and interacts with clients to ensure their needs are met. Get your exercise while you exercise a dog! Lots of great dogs need to get out of their pens so they can enjoy getting to stretch their legs and smell nature. They need to spend time socializing with new people and learning how to walk politely on a leash in order to prepare them for adoption. Some of the dogs would enjoy jogging as well. Some days, if you don't want to do a lot of walking, you can take the dog(s) to the play-yards where you can throw a ball or let them run around and entertain themselves. A variety of dogs are ready to show you around the property and show you their terrific personalities.

The Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights is looking for volunteer Child Advocates. We are in need of bilingual, Spanish speaking, volunteers in the McAllen, Edinburg, Brownsville, Harlingen, and Corpus Christi, TX and surrounding areas.

Make a difference in the life of an unaccompanied immigrant child by volunteering to serve as a Child Advocate. A Child Advocate is an adult who volunteers to spend time with and advocate on behalf of an individual unaccompanied immigrant child while he or she is subject to deportation proceedings. We get to know prospective volunteers through an initial screening interview, an application and reference check, and at the required two-day training. Once assigned to an individual child, each Child Advocate receives continuing training, support, and supervision from the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.

As a Child Advocate, you commit to:

Join us for the 2025 Area Bowling Competition at Main Event in Pharr! We need volunteers to help make this event a success and support our athletes.

Volunteer Roles:

Work together under the supervision of the Community Outreach Coordinator to help create our 2025 Charity Gala Event.

Volunteers needed to help create and coordinate an events fundraiser such as a fishing tournament or charity gala. If you have an interest in community outreach, marketing, events coordination, please consider joining our volunteer events coordination team. 

Opening volunteer positions for those looking to help on weekends to assist with Children's Museum programming. Shifts are split over Saturday and Sunday each day from 12:00 to 5:30pm. After signing up through UTRGV portal you may contact jarixell@cmofbrownsville.com for more information.

The Children’s Museum of Brownsville always needs extra hands to help us sustain a space where children can discover, learn and imagine. We accept youth and adult volunteers (enrolled in school) for a minimum of 30 hours starting at age 15, with approval from the Volunteer Coordinator. All volunteers must adhere to providing immunization records or a doctor’s note stating that the volunteer is cleared to associate with the public. If over the age of 18, a background check will be conducted.

If you are interested in volunteering for a workshop or giving a helping hand for a few hours, please feel free to call us at 956-548-9300 if you have any questions.

We are always seeking workshop volunteers who would like to sponsor a workshop for six months to a year: to read, create an arts/craft, or present once a month at a themed workshop highlighting science, math, reading, history, etc. If this sounds like you, we encourage you to spend your time making a difference in our community and allow yourself the satisfaction that you work and your effort is going toward helping a child learn and develop.

Store/Warehouse hours: 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Come to our warehouse and help us sort and organize donated goods for our Family Store. Tasks include unloading donated goods from donors' vehicles, carrying boxes, and sorting.

The Community Council of the Rio Grande Valley is looking for dedicated volunteers to assist with emergency and disaster-related calls. We provide all necessary equipment, and mileage to the site will be reimbursed.

As a volunteer, you will play a vital role in our mission to connect individuals with essential resources and services. You’ll work in an office setting and receive comprehensive training before responding to any calls. Notably, training hours count as volunteer hours.

We want to help transition those experiencing homelessness into permanent, self-sustaining living by building a personal connection with each of these individuals. We aim to improve the individual's housing, health status, and social support network with services such as resume building, applying for benefits, case management, job search, hygiene kits, and snack bags. As a volunteer, you will assist our street outreach team in providing services to individuals who cannot visit our facilities, supplying individuals with hygiene kits, meals, and bare essential supplies. Please note that there is a minimum hour requirement of 4 hours, as this position consists of driving around neighboring areas to provide our services.

This training opportunity is open to volunteers that would like to serve in American Red Cross shelters.
