Who We Are

The mission of the American Honey Bee Protection Agency is to “pollinate minds” by educating people about the importance of saving wild honey bees from extinction and integrating them into urban environments. The organization’s founder and CEO, Walter Schumacher, became interested in protecting bees after a conversation in 2006 when a friend told him that saving the world begins with saving the honey bee. Inspired by this idea, Walter began searching for ways to remove bees from unwanted locations without harming them. Later that year he created Central Texas Bee Rescue and opened his property to safely relocate bees from homes and other places where people wanted an eco-friendly solution to bee swarms or infestations. As Walter worked closely with wild bees, he developed a deep appreciation for their intelligence and their important role in ecosystems. Realizing that many traditional methods involved killing unwanted colonies, he began promoting the idea of relocating bees and integrating beekeeping into urban environments. This vision led to the creation of the American Honey Bee Protection Agency in 2012. Since then, the organization has helped support laws that encourage relocating bees instead of exterminating them and has worked to raise awareness about pollinators, including helping establish the western honey bee as the state pollinator of Texas. Today, the organization continues rescuing and relocating bees, educating communities, and promoting policies that protect honey bees.
