Who We Are

Infant and Family Nutrition Agency (IFNA) started in 1984 as a ministry of First United Methodist Church of Brownsville. The ministry was named the Infant Nutrition Program  and its primary goal was to assist low-income women of the community by teaching them about the importance of breastfeeding and healthy nutrition habits for pregnant women and newborns. Over the years, the Infant Nutrition Program ministry grew as the community responded to the services rendered and as the program developed a comprehensive plan working with the under served.

What We Do

Today, the program addresses health education needs from prenatal care to health and nutrition, to postpartum instruction and counseling on breastfeeding, to nutrition education for parents of young children. As the programs and the plans for expanded services grew, the organization found it necessary to incorporate and obtain IRS designation as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, nonprofit entity. This was also needed in order to obtain funding from sources not previously available. We are now known as the Infant and Family Nutrition Agency (IFNA). With more than 30 years of service to the communities of the Southern tip of Texas, our goals remain: To provide free bilingual education and peer counseling on prenatal health and nutrition, breastfeeding, family nutrition, and encourage our community to become involved in making healthy choices for themselves and their families. We offer classes at community clinics, schools, and community sites throughout Cameron County. We are now known as the Infant and Family Nutrition Agency (IFNA). New mothers can also receive assistance and information by calling our Breastfeeding Helpline at (956) 561-MILK (6455).
