Corpus Bilingue del Valle

Who We Are

The CoBiVa (Corpus Bilingüe del Valle) documents the Spanish and English spoken in south Texas, specifically in the Rio Grande Valley. Graduate and undergraduate students, under the PIs’ supervision, collect, transcribe, and analyze interviews with local speakers. This digital oral corpus provides material for multiple linguistic analyses of local language varieties and subsequent comparisons with other varieties.

What We Do

Volunteers, student interns, and others working on the CoBiVa have the opportunity to document the language varieties spoken in the Rio Grande Valley. We work on organizing the collection of interviews, revising transcripts, and anonymizing transcripts. We also work on elaborating our website and informing the broader community about the beautiful local language practices.
