IMAS is looking for enthusiastic and outgoing volunteers to assist at the Mysterious Cosmos Family Fun Night event on January 22, 2026 from 6 PM – 8:30 PM. This free admission event welcomes visitors to enjoy a variety of cosmic hands-on activities and presentations. Visitors are also welcome to view the night sky through telescopes, provided and supported by UTRGV Center of Excellence in STEM Education.
*Volunteers will be placed in activity areas based on priority needs and volunteer registration. *
Shifts: (2.5 hr. shifts)

James Webb Paper Models Assistant: Learn about the amazing James Webb telescope that continues to provide amazing imagery of the universe in ways that we have never seen before. In this activity, volunteers will provide materials and assist visitors as they complete their paper James Webb Model.
Cosmic Jeopardy Facilitator: Facilitate and assist in Cosmic Jeopardy. Volunteers will provide timed sessions for Cosmic Jeopardy by assisting the IMAS Educator and help by listening to the buzzers and correct answers. After winning groups are confirmed, volunteers will provide winners with a small prize.
ISS Docking Challenge Facilitator: Learn more about the teamwork and communication skills needed for astronauts and scientists to successfully dock a spaceship to the International Space Station. In this activity visitors will group together to simulate a docking challenge with simple materials such as string, a small ball and a cylindrical docking station. Volunteers will assist the educators and visitors as we work together to complete the challenge.
Spaghettification Flip Book Facilitator: Spaghettification is the theorized phenomenon that occurs when an object enters a black hole. In this activity, volunteers will provide materials and assist visitors as they create their take home spaghettification flip book.
